Kelvin Sampson was fired this past weekend after a firestorm
of media and Indiana
booster uproar after the NCAA reporting of 5 different recruiting violations
since he took over the Hoosier program a year and a half ago. The violations
are mostly related to being a part of conference calls with recruits that he
wasn't allowed to contact and being untruthful about those calls. Sampson
stepped down and interim coach Dan Dakich has taken over.
Ohio
State has had their share
of problems on the court as they have dropped four of their last six games.
With loses to Iowa and Michigan, teams they should have beat, being
the most painful. Consistent play from the entire squad has been lacking as of
late as the Buckeyes look for answers down a final four game stretch that is
crucial if they want to salvage their season and make it to the NCAA
tournament.
Senior Jamar Butler did not start their last game against Wisconsin (L 52-38 in Columbus) for personal reasons, team issues,
or a coaching decision depending on the source of the report. Besides this one
event and the last game against Indiana, Butler has performed well
this season with consistent scoring and assists. The other seniors, Othello
Hunter and Matt Terwilliger, who plays limited minutes, have not been as
consistent as Butler.
Freshman Evan Turner, Jon Diebler, and Kosta Koufos have all
shown flashes but need to put together a good 4 game stretch to propel this
team to a new level worthy of a bid to the big dance. Diebler played well
against Indiana on February 10th and also
performed at a high level for a four game stretch including Indiana. The Wisconsin
game was not his best and he needs to show the promise he had in the four
earlier games tonight.
DJ White dominated Ohio State
on the boards sixteen days ago and I don't know who is going to stop him
tonight. Othello Hunter is the best post player the Buckeyes have but he played
24 minutes in the previous match-up and White was able to score 21 points and
grab 13 rebounds on the Buckeyes in 40 minutes of play.
