According to
Dave Hutchinson, of The Star-Ledger, the New England Patriots are considering
trading up to the number 5 choice from the 7th spot they now own to
draft OSU DE Vernon Gholston. Kansas City now holds the
5th choice and has made it clear they would like to trade down to
save money and get more draft choices.
The Chiefs are looking for an offensive tackle and assuming that Jake
Long is off the board, there are no other tackles that justify that high a
pick.
New England is concerned that their top rival, the New
York Jets, that hold the 6th choice will jump on Gholston to play
outside linebacker in their 3-4 defense.
The Pats would most likely do a conditional trade with the deal
depending on the availability of Gholston at 5.
The Chief would likely get the 7th overall choice and one of
the Patriots' 2 choices in the 3rd round (choice 69 or choice
94). The Patriots got the 7th
overall pick from a trade last year with the San Francisco 49ers.
Even if the
Pats get the 5th pick, it does not insure that they will get
Gholston. The latest rumor around the
NFL is that the Oakland Raiders are considering picking Gholston with the 4th
overall choice. If Atlanta
at 3 is interested in QB Matt Ryan, they may be willing to swap positions with New England. Ryan
is expected to go 8 to the Baltimore Ravens.
However, even 3 may not be high enough to insure landing Gholston
because the Rams at 2 are also expected to be looking at a DE and have
expressed interest in Gholston.
