Offensive Line is Beaten Up but Ready
This Saturday in the Scarlet Gray Game, Ohio State
fans will not get to see the first team offensive line and could see some ugly
play as second string and third string players get to start. A string of
off-season surgeries and spring camp injuries has opened up positions for
players to see more time and get the experience they will need down the road.

Senior
Offensive Lineman Steve Rehring has had to sit out this spring from full
contact after off season surgery but is working hard at other aspects and
should be ready to go in the fall. “Steve should be doing pretty well. He has
the okay to go full speed in the weight room so he can get back going to where
he was. He has a lot of experience, as all of these guys know and we are glad
he is back. You know he will be in the mix.” Offensive Coordinator and Line
Coach Jim Bollman told reporters after a practice recently. Rehring could fill
in at the right guard position available due to the graduation of Kirk Barton
or he could stay on the left side at guard next to Alex Boone like we have seen
him the last few years.
Coach
Bollman also had good things to say about Bryant Browning, a Cleveland
Glenville product who could start at the right tackle position this fall. “The
best thing I see out of Bryant is a little steady improvement each day. He does
something, one aspect of the game, a little better every day. That is the most
pleasing thing to me. He is continuing to build his repertoire and that is what
you want.”
Starting
left tackle Alex Boone felt the JB Shugarts was progressing nicely in practice
this spring. “I have seen a lot out of J.B. Coach Bollman is so smart when he
teaches our guys and it can be difficult to keep up. So far, he is keeping up
really well and has done a great job.” Of course Shugarts is the third
candidate for the right tackle position. Will be interesting to see who
performs better on Saturday at the position, Bryant Browning of JB Shugarts.
All three of the freshman offensive
lineman came in early this year to get a jump on starting positions in the
future. “They are doing a great job. (Mike) Brewster is learning each day and
doing a great job; J.B. (Shugarts) is doing a really good job. They just have
to keep it up and we will see what happens.” Boone said about two of the three
freshmen. The third, Mike Adams, went out with a twisted shoulder and had
surgery during the early portion of spring ball. He should be ready to go when
fall camp arrives in August.
Boone expounded on what it takes to
play as a true freshman on the offensive line. “At this level it is not just
about knowing your assignments. You are playing with guys who are older than
you and have been at this level; it is not high school anymore. At this stage
everyone is amazing. They have to put their pads on and learn to hit and get
hit and take the pain.”
