Who had the best performance at the
Spring Game?
Pete Quint:
Joe Bauserman certainly gave everybody something to think about. None of
the quarterbacks were stand outs but Bauserman was the biggest surprise.
He was little more than an afterthought in my mind coming into the game and now
I think he deserves a legitimate shot at the starting position especially if
Todd Boeckman continues to play like a Jeckel and Hyde. I
also
loved hearing the name Lawrence Wilson again. He's going to be a monster
this year.
Ryan
Leonardo: Taurian Washington
had the best performance, and stood out among other receivers. He made a
good adjustment on a long pass in the first half, and in the second half,
nearly had a 62-yd. TD from Bauserman. A holding call negated the perfect
throw and catch.
Steve Patterson: Terrelle Pryor did a great job recruiting for the 2009 class bringing in Maryland cornerback Darrell Givens and Pennsylvania linebacker Dorian Bell. Both top 250 recruits nationally.
Which position do you feel better
about after seeing the play of several younger players at the position on
Saturday?
Pete Quint:
I feel better about the depth at wide receiver. Taurian Washington and Ray Small came to play on Saturday and
it looks like the Buckeyes will have a deep corps of young men at wide out.
Ryan
Leonardo: The defensive line on both sides proved that there is tremendous
talent on this 2008 team. Lawrence Wilson had the best performance in my
book, as he seemed to be around the ball carrier and pressuring the QB on every
play.
Is there a player that you would
make sure to get into the rotation based upon their play in the Scarlet and
Gray game that might not have been in the two deep before?
Pete Quint:
Taurian Washington
has a long stride, excellent speed and good hands. He should battle
for the number three spot with Dan Sazenbacher.
Ryan
Leonardo: Antonio Henton definitely made a case for himself. All of his
troubles are in the past, and he seems to be headed for some playing
time. His scramble in the 4th quarter with 1:00 to go reminded
me of Troy Smith. He should play his way into the number 2 spot at QB to
begin the season. Obviously, Pryor has an impact as well. One thing
is for sure, if Boeckman keeps throwing those lob passes behind the receivers
and causing turnovers, he might find some bench time.
What area has the most need when
fall camp begins?
Pete Quint:
Todd Boeckman did not look good. I am very worried that he still is under
throwing his receivers. Todd needs to get out of this bad habit quickly
or the Buckeyes will have no shot to get to the national championship.
Ryan
Leonardo: The receiving corps might be the biggest need. With injuries
nagging, we might not be as deep as Tressel would like. But many other
will step in. Once again, I’m very impressed with Taurian Washington.
How did the Big Ten Network do
covering the Spring Game?
Pete Quint:
Due to the rain and my wife wanting to run some errands I skipped out on the
annual spring game planning on catching the replay at 11pm. Well after a
few too many adult beverages at diner, I was shamefully in bed by 11pm (oh
where has my youth gone) and I missed my first spring game in six years.
As I drifted off to sleep I kept reminding myself, "Don't worry...it will
be on Sunday morning at 8am". I fell asleep reassured that I hadn't
missed a thing and will get good and caught up in the morning as I played
heathen and skipped church.
Waking up
the next morning I got my gargantuan mug of coffee, some overly sugared cereal
(ahh..there's my youth) and settled down for the game on the BTN. What
did I encounter? They were not only showing OSU's spring game but they
were also showing the rest of the Big Ten as well. So every chance there
was a break in the action they would switch to Indiana or Wisconsin or whatever other Big Ten team
they felt they had to interrupt the Ohio
State game for and play
ten or more minutes of there spring game. I understand the Ohio State
bellybutton is not the center of the universe but I don't want my ADD fueled by
a crappy network that can't decide which game to show. Listen up BTN,
take a page from the king of the sports world ESPN,
if you are going to have a show that wraps up all the spring games structure it
so that you can see all the highlights from a single team at a time.
Don't string the public along in hopes of selling more advertising space
because most of us will tune out. I hope I never have to turn on this network again.
Ryan
Leonardo: The thing that needs the most improvement is the Big Ten Network’s
commentary. They said “Benny” Wells, “Grant” instead of Gant, “tacker”
instead of tackle and many more that I might have missed. The best is when
a 48-yd field goal from the right hash snuck through the right upright (in
slow-mo) and they called it straight down the middle. I thought over the
off-season that there would be some improvement, but I was terribly
mistaken.
Steve
Patterson: Watching the live feed off the Big Ten Network’s site was
impossible. The feed did not come with any regularity and I was only getting 10
seconds at a time which was about three minutes behind what was happening on
the live audio from 1460 am The Fan.
