Pre-NLF Draft Writer's Q&A

2008 NFL Draft

Pre-NLF Draft Writer's Q&A

Justin Boren, Vernon Gholston, Jake Long, Trades, and Pacman all are discussed.

Your feeling about Justin Boren becoming a Buckeye after playing two years for the school up north?

Bill Smith: All donations gratefully accepted. The best addition to any team is one that makes a key opponent weaker.

Pete Quint: Boren couldn't have picked a better time to transfer to Ohio State.  He will start for the Buckeyes next year and will assure veteran talent and leadership to a young 2009 offensive line.  It will also add gasoline to the OSU/UM rivalry.  What FUN!

Eric Geier: This is unprecedented, but I really think it just comes down to playing for a great football team. I don't think he came to OSU out of spite, but it is sure to anger Michigan fans for years to come. I don't really care about the tradition and all of the extra stuff people want to see him involved with, I just want him to show up and be the best player he can be.

Steve Patterson: Amazing that he disliked Rich Rodriguez that much to leave a top program on a full ride to join their rival and pay his own way.

Vernon Gholston goes to which team in the first round on Saturday?

Bill Smith: Rumors are that the Rams are thinking of taking Gholston. He will not last past 7 with New England.

Pete Quint: If Darrin McFadden is off the board, Gholston will go to the NY Jets. If the Jets draft McFadden, Gholston will be a Patriot or a Bengal.

Eric Geier: He may go to St. Louis. Personally, I would like to see him drop to number 9 and go to the Bengals because they certainly need some defensive weapons.

Steve Patterson: I would say the Jets with the sixth pick overall. I saw some mock drafts with Chris Long going to the Jets but I think Gholston gets picked higher than Long.

Jake Long is going to the Dolphins with the first pick, what are your thoughts?

Bill Smith: I don’t think Long is a left tackle. He has trouble with speed DE--just look at the OSU games. He should be a potential all pro right tackle for years but that is too much to pay a RT.

Pete Quint: Smart.  Look at what Cleveland was able to do with a solid offensive line anchored by a great left tackle.  Miami still has issues (mainly that they play in the tough AFC East) but this will certainly start them down the right road.  As long as Long doesn't turn out to be another Robert Gallery.

Eric Geier: He is a great offensive lineman, I am glad all the speculation about the first pick is gone and we can just move on with the draft.

Steve Patterson: Seems like a solid first pick for the Big Tuna now in Miami. I like that they got everything taken care of ahead of time and there won’t be a hold out with the first pick of the draft going into the season this year.

Best NFL pre-draft player trade for a pick this year?

Bill Smith: I love the Browns deal for Rogers. He can be the most dominant nose tackle in the league. Minnesota paid too much for Allen.

Pete Quint: How did the Patriots get the #7 overall pick again.  That organization must have hired Wolfram and Heart to handle their affairs.  (Those of you who didn't watch Buffy the Vampire Slayer or the spin-off Angle will miss this obscure reference.)

Eric Geier: Jared Allen going from the Chiefs to the Vikings. The Vikings got the better out of this deal, the got a proven player that can boost their defense almost immediately. The Chiefs in return got the 17th draft pick.

Steve Patterson: Pacman Jones to Dallas for a 4th round pick as long as Jones is reinstated before the beginning of camp and stays out of trouble, neither of which is a sure thing.

Pre-draft trade that you would like to see happen?

Bill Smith: Does the Comish taking the 7th choice away from NE for spy gate qualify? I think anyone that trades down would be making the best choice. While the top of the draft is not as sexy as it has been in past years, this draft is deeper than most and much deeper than next year.

Pete Quint: New Orleans trades up to get Glen Dorsey.  Dorsey would get play in front of his home crowd.  That's pretty special.

Eric Geier: Chad Johnson, it's not going to happen though, the Bengals are way too cheap to lose that kind of money, something like 8 million if they trade him.

Steve Patterson: Would like to see Chad Johnson traded away for a couple first round picks and the Bengals replace him with Limas Sweed.

Does Pacman Jones ever play for the Dallas Cowboys?

Bill Smith: The first thing I would do is take the PacMan title away. He needs a major attitude adjustment. I think he will play for Dallas, but the question is for how long? Dallas will get a draft choice back from the Titans if he does not play an entire season.

Pete Quint: I heard this morning that the Cowboys and the Titans have agreed in principle to a trade.  I think he plays for a year and then has another run-in with the law and the commissioner kicks him out of the NFL for good.  I hope he can get his life in order but the way things are going, Pacman isn't going to last long.

Eric Geier: Eventually he will play, like everything else in the Roger Goodell era, it will take time.

Steve Patterson: I think he plays a few games at the beginning of the season before he ends up getting in trouble at a strip club somewhere near Irving.
