The big
wigs from 11 conferences gathered in Hollywood,
Florida overlooking the beach for
a five hour meeting to debate the possibility of a playoff system in college
football. The new format that was up for debate included seeding the top four
teams based on their poll placement at the end of the season. The one seed
would play the four seed and the two seed would play the three seed. Most fans
want to see the new format that would take a lot of the questions out of the
yearly dispute that surrounds who should be crowned Champion, but of course,
contracts, television deals and money disputes got in the way of creating
something that would please the viewing public.
Some
commissioners believe that the system is fine the way it is right now. Week
after week there is a “do or die” scenario for every game. One loss can keep a
team out of the National Championship which makes every game a must win. Dan
Beebe, the commissioner from the Big 12 believes the system is not flawed
saying, “There's a strong feeling in the Big 12 that what we have is working
well.” SEC commissioner Mike Slive
said, "There isn't support among the commissioners at this point to move
forward with this proposal as we move into the next cycle.” However, he did add
that, “the discussions had value,” possibly giving the fans hope for a future
playoff in the Bowl Championship Series.
