Fellows says it's Illinois

University of Illinois head football coach Ron Zook and his staff liked what they saw in Garfield Heights High School defensive end Melvin Fellows during the 2006 high school season.

They were so impressed they offered the 6-5, 245-pounder a scholarship after his sophomore season, and Fellows returned the favor by recently giving the Fighting Illini his oral commitment.

"I know it's only a verbal [commitment] but right now, it's Illinois," said Fellows, a junior defensive end who has already made unofficial visits to Illinois and Ohio State. "Illinois was the first college to offer me a scholarship, they've kept in constant contact with me and I love Ron Zook."

Fellows totaled 88 tackles this season (40 solo), including 23 for loss and 13 sacks.

"Every school that's offered wants me at D-end and I like that," said Fellows, who has offers from Ohio State, Marshall and Virginia. "I'm going to enjoy the recruiting process, and Illinois and Ohio State are definitely going to be two of my five official visits."

Fellows also likes that Illinois has received oral commitments from other local players, in particular Cordale Scott of Glenville and Mayfield's Ashante Williams.

"I talk to Cordale and Ashante all the time," said Fellows, who hinted he might major in physical therapy. "As I said, right now it's Illinois."

Fighting The Illini No More
Fellows is a Buckeye.
Fellows is a Buckeye.

One of the most sought-after prospects in the state of Ohio, Melvin Fellows surprised many people when he issued a verbal commitment to Illinois back in December. But following a trip to Columbus for Ohio State's spring game, Bill Greene has word that the defensive end prospect has changed his mind and will play his college ball for the Buckeyes.

The Ohio State Buckeyes got more good news today when Melvin Fellows notified Jim Tressel he was switching his commitment from Illinois to Ohio State.

"I thought about this long and hard and I' committing to Ohio State," Fellows said minutes ago. "Nothing against Illinois, but this is the best thing for me. The distance was a factor. It will be easier for my family to see me play. Then there's the chance to play for Jim Tressel. That was just too good to pass up."

Fellows notified Ohio State head coach of his decision today.

"Coach Tressel was very happy," Fellows reported. "He told me to work hard and be a leader this year. He also told me to watch the draft this Saturday. He said maybe some day he will be watching my name get selected. I'm very happy to be a Buckeye."

Fellows attended the Ohio State spring game last Saturday and spent time with several Buckeye commits. He said that might have played a part in his decision.

"Those guys are my friends and that made it easier," Fellows explained. "But in the end, I had to do what was best for me and my family. I'm glad to be going to school with Storm Klein, Johnny Simon, and the rest of the Buckeye recruits. It feels great to tell you the truth."

Ohio State Buckeyes step up football recruiting with Illinois trying to take Ohio high school stars

Wednesday, April 23, 2008
Story by Doug Lesmerises
Plain Dealer Reporter

Columbus - Jim Tressel was always willing to nurture his foot ball recruiting classes and allow potential future Buckeyes to come out of their shells in due time.

Then a poacher arrived at the border.

With Illinois coach Ron Zook stalking nearly every one of Ohio State's in-state targets, the Buckeyes have countered with a recruiting flock this April that is more than double its usual size.

In the previous six years combined, Ohio State had a total of 15 oral commitments by April 23. This year, the Buckeyes have 11, including seven from Ohio. Coincidence? Or could the Illini's tactics be inspiring earlier OSU recruiting strategies?

"Well it should," said Glenville High coach Ted Ginn Sr. "Illinois is coming in hard."

"When [Zook] first offered me," said Garfield Heights defensive end Melvin Fellows, "he told me that he wanted to be one of the top programs in Ohio, and that he wanted to offer [scholarships to] the best kids in Ohio."

So far, Zook, an Ohio native and former OSU assistant, has won two head-to-head battles with Tressel. He beat the Buckeyes for Glenville's Cordale Scott in the Class of 2008; and scored a less-than-firm commitment for 2009 from Fellows, who is one of three oral pledges to Illinois but still attended Ohio State's spring game Saturday.

Not a huge windfall.

So perhaps the Illini's most significant in-state recruiting influence can be seen in the Buckeyes -- although they won't admit it.

"We can't worry about other things," said OSU recruiting coordinator John Peterson. "I just think that kids are more prepared."
